What is the Difference Between a Screen Door and Security Door?

What is the Difference Between a Screen Door and Security Door?

If you’re looking to install a security door or screen door (also called secure doors, safety doors or barrier doors) at your home or business, it’s essential to understand the differences between both options.

Here are some essential differences that you’ll need to consider:

Screen Door vs Security Door Differences

CERTIFICATION

First and foremost, a “security door” is defined as a door that passes Australian Standards (AS5039 and AS5041). To meet these standards, the door must pass stringent tests of the strength of all components, including the frame, mesh and lock.

All “security doors” must also be fitted with a three-point locking system (triple lock). A three-point system engages the door at three separate points, typically the top, middle, and bottom of the door frame.

In contrast, “screen doors” do not meet the same certification requirements and are often not fitted with triple locks or premium strength materials.

INSTALLATION

Another critical factor that differentiates security doors from screen doors is the installation method. “Security doors” must meet AS 5040-2003, which governs the installation type and the installer’s qualifications.

PET DOORS

Pet doors are a common addition to security doors in Australia. Once a pet door is installed within a security door, it will no longer meet Australian Standards and can no longer be called a “security door”.

Differences Between Screen Door & Security Door

SECURITY / MATERIALS

“Screen doors” typically consist of a door frame with little or no features to enhance security. Instead, they are designed to provide airflow into your home and protection from insects.

Contrastingly, a “security door” is designed to secure your home or business. They offer superior strength, durability and security with reinforced steel or aluminium frames, high-strength mesh, deadbolts, and triple locks.

It’s important to note that security doors also offer ventilation and insect protection. The best security doors will provide a range of screens and materials that offer different levels of visibility, airflow, security and privacy, thus allowing you to choose the security door that suits your unique requirements.
