Home Security Tips – The Holiday Period

Home Security Tips

With Christmas just around the corner it’s important to keep your home security front of mind.

During late December and January, thousands of families will pack up their belongings and head away for the holiday period. This is when homes become an easy target for burglars and why we see more break-ins than any other time of the year.

In fact, most reports show that home burglaries increase by up to 25% during the first quarter of the year.

Never fear, KNA Security have prepared some handy home security tips to make sure your home is as secure as possible while you go away on holiday –

1) Leave Some Lights On

Leaving some lights on is by far the easiest way to deter would-be burglars. A combination of interior and exterior lights will not only create an illusion that you are still at home, but also help to prevent burglars from working within the protection of the dark at night.

2) Ensure Your Home is Secure

This may sound obvious, although most break-ins occur through open windows or doors that are left unlocked. Furthermore, if you have security screens, roller shutters, alarms and/or CCTV systems, make sure they are all locked and activated.

3) Remove Items That May Conceal a Burglar

Burglars like privacy. Fences, shrubs and trees can allow them to hide from neighbours and people driving or passing by. By removing or cutting back these items and creating a clear line of sight to the road, you will reduce your chances of a break-in.

4) Ask Your Neighbours to Keep an Eye Out & Collect Your Mail

First of all, it’s important to make friends with your neighbours. This can be mutually beneficial and allow you to keep an eye on each other’s house. You can also ask them to collect your mail, as a full mailbox is a telltale sign that your family is away on holiday. Furthermore, you can ask them to park in your driveway while you’re away, which can also help to create the illusion that you are home.

5) Don’t Advertise Your Holiday to the World

Wait until you return home before you start to post holiday photos on social media. Criminals can be known to stalk locals on social media and target them when they promote that they are away on holiday.

6) Store Valuables in a Safe / Safe Place

If an intruder does manage to enter your home while you’re away on holiday, they’ll typically want to grab as many valuables as quickly as possible, then leave. By storing your most precious valuables in a locked safe or an inconspicuous area, you’ll reduce your risks of them being found.
